Want to conduct annual inspections on your fleet or for carriers requesting this service?
First, your mechanic(s) needs to be qualified. Although Michigan requires some mechanics to be state certified, this does not mean they are automatically qualified to perform a periodic inspection.
MTA’s exclusive two-day Periodic Inspection Training (PIT) webinar meets the FMCSR Part §396.19 requirement that individuals are qualified to perform commercial motor vehicle periodic (annual) inspections if they successfully complete a state-sponsored training program.
Discussions focus on:
  • Understanding inspection criteria for required parts and accessories;

  • Reviewing 49 CFR, Appendix G minimum periodic inspection standards;

  • Comparing North American Uniform Vehicle Inspection Procedures and 49 CFR, Appendix G;

  • Contrasting CVSA Out-of-Service-Criteria with the FMCSA Annual Inspection;

  • Understanding annual periodic inspection paperwork.

Provided materials:
  • Exclusive MTA Periodic Inspection Training Manual;

  • Current edition of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations;

  • CVSA Out-of-Service Criteria Reference Guide;

  • Proof of participant's completion of state-sponsored training;

  • Participant certificate of completion.

Presenter-Donald Willcutt, Safety Director, Brenner Oil Company

Training may be presented live, hybrid or via Zoom as protocols allow. Instructions will be provided prior to each scheduled class date. Materials and links for virtually held classes will be sent prior to the class.

Registration and attendance or participation in the MTA PIT Claas constitutes an agreement by the registrant to the use and distribution of the registrant or attendees' image or voice in photographs, videotapes, electronic reproductions and audiotapes of such events and activities by Michigan Trucking Association.
